Unfold Your Story Through Art Journaling

Over the weekend I pulled out some of my old art journals. I do this every now and then just to check in and revisit some of those good ole' days. But it's usually a bit of an emotional roller coaster, paging through the past, thinking about what was and what could have been. But also confirming that where I am now was meant to be and I am so grateful for the rocky road I took.

I used to make journals, not only as a way to let out my thoughts, but also to give myself permission to get messy and raw with how I was feeling. There was no judgment or rules or restrictions, I just went at it...colors, layers, scribbles and words. Over the years I've continued to make journal pages and have recently come to realize that these pages are literally my story and I am thankful that I kept this artful log. They capture the moments that have become my life.

Don’t we all have colors and truth and stories inside that are just yearning to get out?

Memories are best captured when we can remember the vibrancy and feelings that were present at the time. Good or bad, memories make up our stories and supply the foundation for moving ahead. We learn, we grow, we evolve and that is worth recording not only for us, but for future generations.

What I love about making these art journals is that you really don't need much to get started and it forces you to be a bit creative. I rarely spend money on supplies for journals. I forage for paper scraps, photos, stamps, pens, crayons, markers and tape. Nothing has to look pretty or put together. It's about getting those emotions down, along with your words and expressing your vibes through the colors and textures. The less you think about how things will look in the end, the better. Be sloppy - it's good for the soul every now and then :)
