Why I Journal – My Creative Journey with Art Journaling
Art journaling has been a transformative part of my creative life. Whether it’s experimenting with collage, mixed media, or simply capturing thoughts and emotions, journaling allows me to connect with my inner creativity in a deeply personal way. Recently, I shared a new YouTube video where I dive into why I journal and how it shapes my artistic practice.
Why I Love Art Journaling:
Art journaling isn’t just about creating beautiful pages—it’s about self-expression, experimentation, and exploration. Here’s why I love it:
Freedom to experiment: Using mixed media, I combine paints, papers, and found materials to create unique textures and layers. Collage techniques let me weave storytelling into every page.
A space for reflection: Journaling helps me process thoughts and emotions visually, turning my inner world into a tangible creation.
Creative play: Art journaling is playful and intuitive. There’s no “right” way to combine colors, textures, or words—it’s your personal canvas and a way to tap into your inner child.
Tips for Beginners:
If you’re new to art journaling, here are some tips to get started:
Start simple—grab a blank journal or even just a piece of paper and a few favorite supplies.
Don’t worry about perfection—mixed media is all about layering, experimenting, and exploring. You don’t need expensive materials and you certainly don’t need to be neat and tidy. Get messy and have fun.
Use collage elements—magazines, scraps, and ephemera can bring a page to life by building layers. I like to think that our life layers are very symbolic of the layers we add to our journals. Start with your foundation and build up from there - see where it takes you.
Journaling has been an incredible way for me to explore collage, mixed media, and creative expression. If you’re curious about starting your own journey, check out my YouTube channel where I share different ways to create art journals and mixed media collage pieces.
