Art Zine Subscription - Now Available!

Over the last few months, after teaching a few beginner zine classes and recording some videos, the idea of creating a zine subscription service came to mind. It would be a simple, meaningful and fun way for me to connect with my community, share some inspiration and get some happy mail delivered to your door.

It all started years ago when I was deep into journaling and writing. I loved the idea of getting my thoughts out of my head and onto paper, in an artful (and usually very messy) way. I didn’t realize it at the time, but it was a form of therapy and joy for me. It felt good, it felt necessary.

Fast forward about 10 years and I still love incorporating art journaling, collage and inspirational messages into my work. Last month as I was tidying up my studio for Art Safari, I came across a page where I wrote how I wanted to write to people and send happy hellos to mailboxes around the world. See photo below.

Hold up, what’s a zine?!

A zine (pronounced "zeen") is a self-published, non-commercial print-work that is typically produced in small, limited batches. Zines are created and bound in many DIY ways such as folding, taping or stapling the pages into simple pamphlets.

A bit of history: Before the internet, zines allowed people to create networks, share ideas, and creatively collaborate. The first zines were created in the 1930s, when artists rendered their own science fiction fanzines, or “fan magazines.” During the Beat generation of the 1950s and 1960s, independent authors self-published zines that explored their views on American culture and politics. Zines continued to be a medium of expression throughout the 1970s, when they allowed people to have a voice outside of mainstream media. The self-published magazines helped shape the feminist movement, and in the 1980s, the punk scene saw an array of zines dedicated to music and a cultural revolt against authority.

How are they made? Many different ways, depending on the maker. Click here to see one example, where I walk you through the steps of making an 8 page zine.

How does the subscription work?

  • This initial year (as I’m testing things out), will be a quarterly zine subscription (so 4 zines throughout the year, starting in January).

  • The zines are created by me, each unique and with a different message each time.

  • Each zine will be shipped directly to your home or preferred address.

  • Size and style of each zine will vary throughout the year (so you won’t get the exact same thing every time).

  • Zines are printed on high quality paper with lots of color and high amounts of joy.

  • I include extra happy things in each envelope.

  • Like this idea and want to give it as gift? A perfect little treat for a friend, relative or co-worker.

  • Zines are kid-friendly too! (No adult language or messages).

  • Subscriptions will not automatically renew each year. I’ll send a notification before your last zine is shipped, giving you the option to renew.

Timing: 4 new zines will be shipped to you throughout the year (Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall) starting in January.

Cost: $60 for the entire year.

If this all sounds good to you and you’re ready to sign up, hooray! Simply click below to be taken to my shop!

Still have some questions? Let me know here. (This is my first go at doing a subscription, so I may have missed something. Your questions will be helpful, so please ask away!)

Super excited about this and hope you are too!
