Five Ways to Strengthen your Artistic Voice

Our artistic voice is the unique combination of our skills, experiences, and perspectives that we bring to our artwork. In other words, our artistic voice is our unique "signature" that permeates our work, making it unmistakably ours.

One of the biggest hurdles I’ve witnessed from working with fellow artists, is finding the confidence in our own unique work and in our artistic voice. Establishing our voice forces us to be vulnerable and brave, which can feel scary. Yet if we shift our mindset a bit, and begin to really own our voice and explore it, we can begin to make big steps forward in our work and our lives. So let’s explore how we can strengthen this voice…

5 ways to nurture and strengthen our artistic voice…

1. Embrace Exploration

Exploring different techniques, mediums, and genres can stretch your artistic style and help you find your unique voice. Don't confine yourself to a single style or medium - the beauty of art lies in its diversity. By trying out different techniques, you may stumble upon something that resonates with you and becomes a significant part of your artistic voice.

2. Stay Curious

Being an artist involves a continuous process of learning and growing. By staying curious, you're more likely to take risks, try new things, and grow as an artist. Read books, take courses, visit galleries, follow other artists, and keep yourself informed about developments in your chosen medium. The more you know, the more tools you have to express your artistic voice.

3. Consistent Practice

Artistic voice is not something that cannot be developed overnight. It takes time, patience, and a lot of practice. The more you create, the more you understand what you like, what you're good at, and where your unique strengths lie.

Remember, every piece of art you create is a step forward in your journey.

4. Embrace your Individuality

Your artistic voice is a reflection of who you are. Embrace your individuality and let it shine through in your work. Don't try to imitate others - your unique experiences, perspectives, and thoughts are what make your art truly yours. Be confident and proud of your unique artistic voice.

5. Reflect and Critique

Take the time to reflect on your work. What themes or patterns do you see? What aspects of your work make you proud? By critiquing your own work, you can identify what elements are consistent in your art and make them the foundation of your artistic voice.

Remember, nurturing your artistic voice is a journey, not a destination. And like all journeys, there will be ups and downs, detours, and discoveries. Embrace the process and enjoy the journey of self-expression. If you’d like to explore more about your own personal artistic voice, contact me here: hello@katiegebely.com
